
Yoga has been used as therapy since ancient times and has been recognised as a modality all its own in the USA since 1989 with Australia fast catching up. When practiced with dedication to honouring the self, yoga therapy can be life-changing. Modern science now agrees that these ancient practices offer incredible value to our overall wellbeing. Long term yoga practitioners know the health benefits of pranayama (breath practices) dhyāna (meditation) asana (postures) and japa (mantra chanting) and how these practices can support mobility, cardiovascular health, blood pressure, strength, emotional wellness, immune function, oxygen supply, feelings of fulfillment, psychological health and spiritual growth. Yoga therapy includes accessible practices for those with limited mobility, for example where wheelchair use or balance issues may prevent standing for more than a few minutes. Yoga therapy can assist as part of holistic care practices if you are unable to leave your bed.
A yoga therapy consultation provides guidance to restore your health through the practice of yoga. It's an opportunity to discuss any health issues or injuries and develop a realistic, meaningful and therapeutic personal practice. It doesn't require any previous yoga experience and there are no expectations of long-term commitment to regularly show up. However, you may decide to stay with yoga therapy over the continuum of your recovery; the choice is yours. During the initial consultation, all areas of your life are taken into consideration to help build the foundation for a personal practice that is realistic enough that you can stick with it no matter how challenging or chaotic your life is. This is a self-directed approach to enhance your quality of life with an emphasis on reducing suffering, managing symptoms and cultivating a pleasant and sustainable practice. No one can do it for us, it's up to each of us to walk our path.
